Can I open PDF-documents from SharePoint/MetaShare in Adobe client applications (Adobe Acrobat Pro/DC)?
Currently Office 365/SharePoint online does not support opening PDF-documents directly in the client application (Adobe Acrobat Pro/DC). Instead they are opened in SharePoint’s web viewer. There is a UserVoice suggestion addressing this issue, with a lot of votes, but so far there is no communicated road-map from Microsoft for this feature.
From SharePoint’s web viewer you can now choose to open the document in your browser, by clicking on the “Open” function, located on the top left of SharePoint’s web viewer and there select the “Open in the browser” option:
Depending on the browser that you are using, you will now get different options as all browsers have their own settings to control how PDF-documents open in their browsers:
In Google Chrome (if you have installed the Adobe Acrobat Extension for Google Chrome) and in Internet Explorer (if you have installed Adobe PDF Reader plug-in) you get the option to open the PDF-document in Adobe Acrobat by clicking on these functions:
- Google Chrome:
(pops up on the right-hand side of the document)
(is shown in Chrome’s menu, to the right of the address bar)
- Internet Explorer:
But unfortunately none of these options will actually give you the possibility to edit the document and then save it back directly to SharePoint.
